“Bitter” is a very popular style of British Ale. I may not be exaggerating to say it is the most popular style in Great Britain. One thing that sets it apart is that it is intended as a “session” beer. This means it has a low alcohol content so that you can sip several of them over the course of a session of hanging and talking to friends without getting stinko drunk. 21st Amendment set out to create such a beer for America with Bitter American. The ABV of Bitter American is only 4.4%, which is lower than most mass commercial beers. However, it does not suffer from a lack of flavor. It has a healthy dosing of Warrior and Cascade hops, giving the slight hoppy bitterness of a mild IPA. Nevertheless, it is still well balanced with a hearty malt backbone. This is a nice session beer to have while grilling or sitting around chatting with friends. It goes well with burgers, watermelon and corn on the cob. I give it 3 out of 5 proper pints.
